anytime you've got 36 united states senators who voted down sandy relief a couple days ago, you know that something has fundamentally changed about the way that republicans talk about government. so i think it's too early to say that they're dead, but all the things dana points to are good signs and signs of some kind of sanity seeping in. >> and dana, maybe it's all in a name. because i think what continues on for sure is this conservative domination particularly in republican primaries. i mean, here you've got mitch mcconnell being threatened now in kentucky and next year's election from the right. >> right. and the tea party's never really been an organized political force. and i'm using that as a shorthand for the far right that's been dominating the party right now. and as i point out in the column, that force really isn't going anywhere because of the redistricting, because of the way things are structured in the house. and because of this primary system. we also have saxby chambliss bowing out rather than face a primary challenge. the element of the party is going to be domina

after an election year in which republican nominees serving in the united states senate introduced america to the concept of legitimate rape and the idea that sometimes god wants rapists to impregnate their victim, after an election like that and its attendant inevitable electoral defeats, republican strategists are now coaching their party to not do that anymore. they're holding training programs and seminars with pollsters, all dispensing friendly advice to republicans about how to stop talking in public about abortion and rape in ways that creep everybody out. "this is actually pretty simple. if you're about to talk about rape as anything other than a brutal and horrible crime, stop." stop yourself, congressman. deep breath. try some gum or maybe a lozenge. so that's what's happening at the national level. republicans pleading with other republicans to please for god's sake stop talking the way you talk about women and rape and abortion. that's the conversation in d.c. where outside the house of representatives republicans are out of power and part of the reason they are out of power is

still even in the united states senate, saxby chambliss, who got an a-plus rating from the nra and a 100% rating from the national right to life committee, he is being forced out. he is not far right enough. thank goodness for former chairman of the republican party and as always a good sport, mr. steele. nice to see you. >> it's good to see you, rachel. >> do you think there is really no imprint at all that mitt romney should have left on the republican party? they're just trying to pretend like he was a bad dream. >> well, that's just silly. and the fact of the matter is that mitt romney went through a primary process in which delegates and activists around the country voted overwhelmingly for him. and so to now sit back and say well, there may not be a romney wing of the party, but certainly as our nominee, he did -- he did have some stature. he did leave an imprint and an impression. and you can't whitewash that. you can't just say it didn't happen, it didn't exist. and if we ignore it and pretend it never did, then everything else we do will be better. so it's just silly. and it

we know that real filibuster reform will not be coming to the united states senate. we know that in the last few years the senate has ground to a halt as the filibuster has been in unprecedented frequency. we know that the number of senate bills passed is the historical low. and we know that the obstruction of nominees is to bad that the president had to recess a point to the printer. and we know that senators representing 10% of americans can kill any bill or nomination. we know that in 2011 a few far sided progressors edadvocated t change the rules that would have requi required those who are fill be busting to hold the floor and talk and they were ignored by the fellow democrats. with know that harry reid himself said that ignoring the calls for reform was one of the biggest gets and only we thought we knew that there were enough votes to pass genuine reform in the caucus, but we know that won't happen as harry reid struck a gentleman's agreement to alter slightly some of the worst procedural abuses. we know that whatever changes there are, are due to the activist

the united states must get out of these massive land wars, iraq and afghanistan, and if possible avoid future large-scale war. despite all of the posturing and starcraft, hagel's nomination, well, is not in jeopardy. not one senator who previously voiced support for hagel has changed his or her mind. i think a lot of this has to do with jealousy. chuck hagel has an extraordinary background. very diverse. it all starts with being a combat veteran in vietnam. and of course educated under the g.i. bill. he understands veterans' issues and the possibility of what military war does, of course, to the guys on the ground. he has experience in washington and in the business world unparalleled to anybody on that senate armed services committee. he's a self-made guy in american business. this man has a resume most of these senators wish they had. he never did anything as reckless as john mccain did when he picked sarah palin to be a heartbeat away from the presidency. gosh, i wish he could have reversed the questioning today. if you ask me, this opposition to hagel is nothing but sour grapes. je
